Stephan is a soft, fluffy beige rat with big round googly eyes, pink ears, long whiskers, a black button nose, little pink paws and a long, long pink tail. Thoughtful, funny and full of character – about 23 cm tall, a lovely gift for rat lovers and collectors.
A crochet pattern by Svetlana Pertseva with step-by-step instructions, tips and photos. The rat is crocheted with fine fluffy yarn; a wire frame lets him sit, stand and pose, and a little weight in his bottom helps him balance. Optional tinting is explained. Not a toy for small children (wire, beads).

MATERIALS AND TOOLS:

• Main yarn – I used “Italy” (75% viscose, 25% polyamide, 400 m / 50 g), 45 g; any fluffy or textured yarn (mohair, angora, wool, wool blend etc.) will do.
• Smooth yarn – I used “Areola” No. 10 (100% acrylic, 400 m / 50 g): 5 g white for the eyes, 5 g pink for the ears, 3 g black for the nose, and pink split in half (1 strand of 2) for the paws, feet and tail.
• Crochet hooks – I used 1.5 mm (main yarn, ears, nose and eyes) and 1.25 mm (paws, feet and tail).
• Two black eyes 2–3 mm (ready-made eyes or black beads).
• Fishing line 0.2–0.3 mm for the whiskers and eyelashes.
• Wire – nichrome wire 0.7–0.8 mm (220 cm / 86.6 inches) or copper wire 1 mm, plus thinner wire for the paws (80 cm / 31.5 inches) – and adhesive fabric tape about 1 cm wide for the wire ends.
• Weight for his bottom (glass beads, plastic pellets, small marbles or steel shot) – optional.
• Stuffing, a long sewing needle; optional: material for tinting (acrylic fabric paint, oil pastels or oil paints).
