Skinfaxi and Hrímfaxi, the horses of Day and Night from Norse mythology: a flame-coloured horse with a glowing beaded mane and tail, and a black horse with a long flowing mane. Slender wire-framed legs let them prance and stand proudly; you can also turn them into a unicorn.
A crochet pattern by Alexandra Simba with step-by-step instructions and photos (54 pages), with bead charts for the flame mane and tail and the testers’ horses for inspiration. The Hippocampus sea horse (0025) is an add-on to this pattern.

• Smooth, not too stretchy wool/mohair yarn – I used YarnArt Angora Ram (40% mohair, 60% acrylic, 500 m / 100 g), about 33 g: colour 520 for the flame horse, 585 for the black horse.
• Flame mane and tail: Czech No 10–11 or Japanese No 11 seed beads in yellow, orange, red and petrol. Black mane: felting wool tops, lamb wool locks or Alize Diva yarn.
• 1.5 mm copper wire (the core of a 3x1.5 electric cable) – about 2 m, white fabric plaster or insulation tape and stuffing.
• 8–10 mm toy eyes, beads or glass cabochons, sewing thread, strong thread for sculpting; optional transparent glue, dry pastels and a black ballpoint pen.
• 1.25 mm crochet hook, sculpting and bead needles (No 15), wire cutter, scissors and a hard synthetic brush.
