Meet Serafima, a funny fluffy rat with huge round eyes, a long nose with a black tip, pink-lined ears, a striped grey-and-black body and thin wire arms, legs and tail. The wire frame lets her stand, sit, wave or hold a little book – a cheeky character for a shelf or a desk and a great gift for anyone who loves rats and mice.

A crochet pattern by Svetlana Pertseva with step-by-step instructions and photos. The rat is crocheted in moderately fluffy yarn; the whites of the eyes can be crocheted or made from polymer clay, and the mouth can be felted or embroidered (instructions are given).

MATERIALS AND TOOLS:

--------------------------------------

•    Moderately fluffy yarn, used double (e.g. Alize Kid Royal, 62% mohair, 250 m / 25 g): 40 g of grey and 20 g of black for the main parts, 10 g of pink for the inner ears.

•    Black smooth yarn for the nose (e.g. 100% wool, 500 m / 100 g); a little white smooth yarn for the whites of the eyes (if crocheting them).

•    Crochet hook 1.75 mm (approx. US steel 6, UK 3½).

•    A little white polymer clay for the whites of the eyes (or crochet them); two small black beads (1 mm) or safety eyes.

•    Single core copper or steel wire 1 mm, about 100 cm (40 inches), for the arms, legs and tail.

•    Stuffing, tapestry needle, strong thread for tightening, transparent glue, fishing line for the whiskers, Velcro or a brush for brushing up.

•    A felting needle and a little black wool for felting – or black embroidery thread – for the mouth; any material for tinting (I used oil pastel).
