A round, fluffy bullfinch with a bright red tummy, a black head, grey wings with white stripes, big shiny eyes and pale blue boots, dressed in a long knitted nightcap with a pompom and a cosy striped scarf. About 25 cm tall – a cheerful winter friend and a lovely Christmas gift.
A crochet pattern by Julia Ogol with step-by-step instructions, tips and photos. The bird is crocheted with fluffy yarn and brushed up; a wire frame lets him stand and pose. The hat and scarf are knitted (optional, instructions included).

MATERIALS AND TOOLS:
--------------------------------------
• Main yarn – I used “Lotus Travka Stretch” by Kamteks (70% acrylic, 28% polyamide, 2% lycra, 80 m / 50 g): about 50 g grey, 50 g red, 25 g black and 25 g white; any moderately fluffy yarn will do.
• Yarn for the socks and boots – I used “Soufflé” by Moscow Yarn Company (100% acrylic, 292 m / 100 g) in red, white, beige and blue.
• Matching crochet hook – I used 3 mm for all yarns.
• A pair of ready-made eyes (I used 16 mm half beads) and a piece of white felt for the whites of the eyes.
• Black polymer clay and varnish for the beak, or a ready-made beak.
• Single core copper PVC electrical wire – about 240 cm (94.5 inches), 2–2.5 mm thick; optional: fabric tape about 1 cm wide for the wire ends.
• Strong thread for needle sculpting, transparent glue, stuffing, scissors and a brush or Velcro to brush up the toy; optional: material for tinting.
• Hat and scarf (optional): any yarn (I used white “Soufflé”), knitting needles 4 mm for the hat and 2 mm for the scarf.
